Woods and Finishes: Which is Best For You?

Home | Bathroom Cabinets

cabinet design wood finish

Cabinets can add so much character to a space – with seemingly endless options, cabinets can make a room feel light and airy, dark and moody, or warm and earthy. When picking out custom cabinets for your space, knowing the differences between wood types and finishes can help you customize the right cabinets for you.

Wood Types

Each type of wood has its unique characteristics and benefits. Below are some of the main attributes that each type offers.

Woods and Finishes: Which is Best For You?
  • Knotty Alder
This type of wood usually is light brown in hue and is decorated with mineral streaks and natural imperfections. It is excellent for staining, easily customizable to create darker tones if desired. Cabinets made with knotty alder make the space feel earthy, cozy, and homey.
  • Cherry
Cherry is a reddish-brown wood that brightens up a space while keeping it warm. Within cherry, Rasmussen Custom Cabinetry offers two different kinds: standard cherry, and rustic cherry. The classic cherry wood has no knots, providing a good option for modern homes, while rustic cherry includes many knots, perfect for farmhouse style designs.
  • Hickory
Hickory wood is a beautiful balance of light and dark tones, complemented with the natural grain patterns. This provides a homey atmosphere, while maintaining a sophisticated feel in the room. Rasmussen also offers a Rustic Hickory Calico, which allows for maximum color and banding variation. The strength of this wood gives it a durability that is perfect for kitchens and living rooms.
  • Maple
Nothing beats a classic and maple wood is definitely timeless. It has a creamy color with a uniform grain pattern, which provides a versatile base for any look. Because of its lighter color, maple is ideal for staining or painting. Rustic maple is often a popular choice because of how customizable it is. This wood is sturdy, resistant to moisture and scratches, and is an excellent choice for any room.
  • Rift White Oak
This unique kind of oak is perfect for showcasing your space – its sleek, neutral tones provide the room with an airy, modern feel. For further customization, this wood is easily stained to accomplish the look you want. Scratch-resistant and durable, rift white oak is definitely a good investment.
  • Rustic Walnut
If you like the cozy warmth of a cabin in the woods, then this is the perfect choice of wood. Rustic walnut has deeper, earthy tones that can be stained to achieve either a modern or antique look, depending on your wants. Walnut will often stain very darkly, which enhances the grain patterns and leads to a rich and luxurious look.
  • Red-Oak Plain Swan
For those who like the look of rustic walnut, but can’t afford the price tag, Rasmussen provides red-oak plain swan as a more flexible alternative. It has a warmer base, but can easily be stained to achieve the look of most other woods. This wood can adapt to be a rustic or a timeless look and can work well in whatever space you’d like.

Finish Types

Woods and Finishes: Which is Best For You?

Similar to selecting a wood for your cabinets, choosing a finish can impact the look of the final result. Maybe you would like to keep the natural elements of the wood as is, or maybe you want to stain it or paint it to look a certain way. Wherever you stand, knowing the options can help you pick what will be best for you.

  • Oil-Based Stains
Oil is a great option if you are wanting to adjust the color of the wood while maintaining the wood’s original grain. It soaks into the wood to provide a long-lasting look in the style you want it.
  • Water-Based Stains
If you would still like to stain your wood but would prefer a quicker, more environmentally-friendly option, then water-based stains are a great alternative. The wood is able to dry more quickly with this kind of stain and the cabinets will be more easily recyclable.
  • Glaze Finishes
Maybe you want to preserve the wood without impacting the color or look of it. Glaze can be a great option, due to its ability to function as a clear sealant and provide an extra layer of protection for your cabinets.
  • Paint
A classic option that allows for endless customization options, paint is a great choice for cabinets in any space. There are multiple kinds of paint that you can choose from: oil, acrylic, chalk, water-based, and latex. Each of these comes with its own set of benefits, but paint can be an easy way to finish off the look of your cabinets if you don’t want the look of the natural wood showing.

Rasmussen Custom Cabinetry offers all of these options of wood types and finishes, providing the materials you need for the look you want.

Small bathrooms present a set of unique challenges when it comes to home design. Limited space often leads to compromised aesthetics and inefficient functionality, but it doesn’t have to be this way. With the right approach and the expertise of a custom cabinet company like Rasmussen, even the most cramped bathrooms can become luxurious, relaxing spaces.

If you’re feeling squeezed by a small bathroom, keep reading to explore the transformative power of custom cabinets and learn about solutions that maximize space without sacrificing style.

#1. Understanding the Challenges

You can imagine the challenges that come with a small bathroom — the lack of storage space and awkward layouts make it difficult to perform your daily routines, especially if you share the space with others. Understanding these hardships is the first step toward finding effective solutions. As experts in custom cabinets, we recognize the importance of optimizing every single square inch of space and maximizing storage capacity.

10 Ways Custom Cabinets Make a Big Impact on Small Bathrooms

#2. Tailored Solutions

Cabinets are not one-size-fits-all. Unlike off-the-shelf cabinets, our custom solutions can be tailored to fit the exact dimensions and layout of your small bathroom. This individualized approach ensures every nook and cranny is utilized, upgrading the space’s functionality. From vertical storage to corner cabinets, our expert craftsmen can make the most of even the tightest spaces.

#3. Customized Organization

Another significant advantage of opting for custom cabinets in your small bathroom is the ability to customize organization to suit your specific needs. This keeps clutter at bay and maintains a tidy environment. For cramped spaces, this means maximizing efficiency through thoughtful design features like pull-out drawers, built-in dividers, and adjustable shelves.

#4. Space-Saving Techniques

We specialize in space-saving techniques that are ideal for small bathrooms. Our clever storage solutions include built-in shelves, under-vanity storage, hidden doors, and recessed cabinets. By incorporating these features into your bathroom remodel, we can help you free up valuable space, creating a more open and inviting atmosphere.

#5. Dual-Purpose Design

In small bathrooms, everything must serve more than one purpose. Custom cabinets can be designed with this principle in mind, offering multifunctionality without sacrificing style. For example, a vanity mirror with hidden storage can serve as the room’s focal point while tucking your belongings out of sight, seamlessly combining form and function.

#6. Light Reflection

Speaking of mirrors, another effective strategy for making a small bathroom feel larger and more open is incorporating reflective surfaces into the design. Glossy finishes, mirrored panels, and glass-front cabinet doors bounce light around the room, giving it a brighter atmosphere and enhancing its overall ambiance.

#7. Seamless Integration

Our custom cabinets are crafted to seamlessly integrate with the existing layout of your small bathroom. This contributes to a cohesive look and feel, creating a sense of unity and harmony. Whether you’re renovating an outdated bathroom or building a new home, custom cabinets can be designed to meet your exact specifications.

#8. Stylish Design Options

Small bathrooms can be stylish, too. We offer an array of design options to suit your personal aesthetic preferences. Whether you’re looking for classic sophistication or modern minimalism, custom cabinets can be tailored to complement your home’s design scheme. The possibilities are truly endless!

#9. Durability and Longevity

Choosing high-quality custom cabinets for your small bathroom is an investment in durability and longevity. Our products are crafted from top-of-the-line materials and built to withstand the challenges of daily use. With the right care and maintenance, your custom cabinets will stand the test of time, ensuring your small bathroom remains stylish and functional for years to come.

#10. Value Addition

Beyond the immediate benefits, custom cabinets can also increase your home’s resale value, especially when they’re part of a larger remodeling project. Potential buyers are often willing to pay more for homes with well-designed, modern bathrooms. By making wise investments in quality and functionality, you’re not just making your small bathroom more enjoyable — you’re also increasing your chances of a successful sale when the time comes.

Before you work with a custom cabinet designer, it can be beneficial to hear the words of clients who have previously worked with our team. This blog will share their stories and how their project was completed. Rasmussen Custom Cabinets has worked with many different homeowners who all have different visions. We know how to make your dreams a reality to help you love your cabinets.

Our owner Colton Rasmussen, says “We want you to love them, we want you to appreciate them. Through breakfast, lunch, and dinner.”

Since you use your cabinets multiple times a day, the quality needs to be astounding if you want them to last. Working with our team will give you the workmanship you envision, the durable wood that withstands wear and tear, and the accessories that make using your kitchen, bathroom, or office easier.

Working With Professional Home Builders

RCC works with many homebuilders in the industry to create new homes with stunning wood cabinets. One homebuilder that we work with is Tory Astle from OLO Builders.

“One thing they do really really well is they over-communicate,” Astle said. “In building, if we’re not communicating, there is potential for error. There is potential for mistakes, and we want to make the process as easy as possible for our clients so that they can feel like this is the best decision they’ve ever made.”

Words from our clients

In another home that Tory and our team worked on, our team at RCC messed up the color of the client’s cabinets. These cabinets were installed and the issue was not noticed until the entire set was installed in the home. Tory contacted our team and we took full responsibility for the mix-up. We did everything in our power to expedite the new cabinets in the correct color. Our team worked quickly to take out the old cabinets, install the new ones, and keep the quality structure of your home.

In the end, this client was impressed with how we handled the mistake and was really happy with the new set of cabinets that were installed.

The Johnson Kitchen

Jennifer Johnson met with Ellie, one of our design consultants, to help bring her kitchen wishlist to fruition. Jennifer’s dreams were made into a reality when she handed her list of must-haves over to RCC.

Doug Johnson was impressed with how quickly our team at Rasmussen was able to design and install the cabinets in their home.

“Everything is done when they say it is going to be done,” Johnson said. “That was the most amazing thing because dealing with contractors, that seldom is the case.”

We do all in our power to keep your building project on schedule. No matter what timeline you expect for your home, exceeding your expectations is important to our company.

Down the line, the Johnsons also had an issue with their crown molding after moving into their home. RCC’s owner, Colton, personally came out to inspect the issue and recommended RCC replace that section of the cabinet. We have a quick turnaround to get the quality of your home back and improve the look of your cabinets.

Cragun Craft Room

Rasmussen Custom Cabinetry offers custom options for many different rooms in your home. Shawna Cragun enlisted the help of our team for her craft and sewing room. Our team took her vision, drew up plans, and installed the cabinets quickly. After moving in and putting away her supplies, Cragun realized that RCC installed small things that she didn’t even realize she would need.

“There are things that they automatically add in their packages that a lot of cabinet places don’t but that you will pay extra for,” Cragun said.

She was surprised at how superb and thorough the team was in ensuring that her room was able to stay organized and functional.

Why Clients Choose Rasmussen Custom Cabinetry

Our owner Colton Rasmussen knows that building a home is a stressful endeavor. We want to help you have the quality at a great price. Things like soft close doors, 100-pound rated drawers, high-quality spray and paint jobs, and other intricate details you can’t get anywhere else, are what make our company the best in Utah. Because of these add-ons, your cabinets will have a longer lifetime than cabinets from other pre-made manufacturers.

Rasmussen also strives to make any problem right. We will replace any cabinets that become damaged, need a repair after installation, or are not the color you originally chose.

We want our clients to be happy. “We don’t want to take guesses, we don’t want to take shortcuts, we just want them to be happy, and that’s why we have a detailed system,” Rassmussen says.
